Fiat Chrysler Automobiles today announced that the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck achieves fuel consumption estimates of 10.5/7.3 L/100 km (city/highway), figures that just miss making it the most fuel-efficient full-size pickup in Canada.
That title lies with the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and their new light-duty diesel, rated at 10.2/7.8 L/100 km (city/highway). Ram's new diesel does, however, beat the Ford F-150's diesel ratings of 11.1/8.3 L/100 km.
Still, Ram says its new diesel's consumption figures are good enough for 1,600 km of driving before the optional 125L fuel tank runs dry. That beats the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4x2 diesel's potential 1,486-km range with the regular cab's 107L tank. And the Ford F-150 diesel's max range is 1,447 km for a 4x4 model (11.9/9.4 L/100 km, city/highway) with an upsized 136L tank that's not available with the thriftier rear-wheel drivetrain.
Ram claims its new 3.0L V6 turbodiesel is tops in light-duty diesel torque, with 480 lb-ft, and half-ton diesel towing, with a 5,697-kg capacity. The engine makes 260 horsepower.
The 10.5/7.3 L/100 km figures are for a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 4x2. Ratings for 4x4 trucks are 11.1/8.0 L/100 km.
Ram's new diesel replaces a similar engine that was the target of an emissions probe resulting from increased scrutiny in the wake of the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal. Ram also offers the 1500 with its eTorque mild-hybrid technology, whose fuel consumption is estimated at 11.9/9.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with a 3.6L gas V6 and RWD, and 14.1/10.3 L/100 km with the 5.7L V8 and RWD.
