Cadillac's forthcoming XT4 compact crossover will be among the first GM models to use a four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation when it goes on sale later this year.
The XT4's 2.0L engine will use a special valvetrain, shared with the 2.7L motor that will power some versions of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, to bring the fuel-saving cylinder shutdown tech to the two models.
The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, already widely used in GM's V8 engines, will be capable of deactivating two of the engine's four cylinders in one of three TriPower modes. The other two modes are a standard "performance" mode and an eco mode that leaves all four cylinders operational.
Other fuel-saving tech is less groundbreaking: There's an electric water pump to "intelligently and precisely" control coolant flow, and GM also calls out the automatic transmission's active oil management system, which enables the engine's auto stop-start function.
When it arrives in late 2018, the XT4 will boast a promised 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, a nine-speed automatic transmission and an optional all-wheel drive system that can decouple from the rear wheels when the extra traction isn't needed.
