Musk Shows Tesla Model 3 Driving on the Road

Have you been eagerly anticipating the launch of the Tesla Model 3, or fearing that you're never going to get your car? Well, Elon Musk has just made your day, with a video of the Model 3 release candidate.

The short clip, posted to Musk's Instagram account, shows what he calls the "first drive of Model 3 release candidate." A release candidate, in software speak, is a test version with the potential to be a final product. In short, it's ready to release to the public unless significant problems show up. Everything that the production car needs or will have should be in there now.

Musk was tweeting earlier about the car, reminding buyers that the Model 3 is a cheaper smaller version of the Model S, not a new flagship or improvement. In tech terms, think iPhone SE vs. iPhone 7, not iPhone 6 and iPhone 7. In car terms, Musk called it the Model 3 "is like a BMW 3 series or Audi A4. Model S is like BMW 5 and 6 series." He also mentioned that it will not have a head-up display, and will give less information than other Teslas, because of increased autonomy. The car will also be rear-drive only at launch, to simplify production. All-wheel drive will follow in around a year.

Full production of the 3 still hasn't started, it's scheduled to begin later this year.
