Honda has just launched two new versions of its side-by-side all-terrain vehicle, and this time, they're getting an all-new four-wheel-drive system. The Pioneer 1000 LE and 1000-5 LE will get a new system that Honda calls an industry first.
The new computer-controlled I-4WD system offers an automotive-style torque-biasing limited-slip differential. Honda says that it provides as much power transfer as a locking differential, but without the high steering effort and kickback a traditional locking differential causes. There is also no need to stop to engage and disengage a differential lock, it all happens electronically and automatically. Other features added to the Pioneer models include hill-start assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake traction control.
The Pioneer 1000 LE is a three-seat model with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 999cc twin engine. The 1000-5 LE adds two more doors, and two more seats, for a total capacity of five on board.
The new I-4WD isn't the only feature added to the limited edition LE models. They also add adjustable Fox shocks, a new tubular bumper, skid plates, illuminated dash, new cabin storage compartments, and thicker seat foam. The transmission will now also remember if automatic, sport, or manual mode was chosen after engaging reverse.
