The Porsche 911 RSR is the ultimate 911. It's not compromised for street use, not even in a stripped down form like the GT2 or the R. The RSR is the full-on race car that competes in the World Endurance Championship GTE class. The current model has been gracing tracks for four years and now it's time for a new one. That new car will debut tomorrow at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
But to keep us on the edge of our keyboards, Porsche is teasing a sketch of the new car today. Of course there is a massive rear wing, a diffuser that seems to stick out into tomorrow, and some suspicious looking vents where the rear side windows normally go. Porsche is keeping it quiet, but the missing glass and massive diffuser sure give the appearance that the new RSR is going to be mid-engine. That's a huge step for Porsche, but in a class where the competition is the Ford GT and Ferrari 488, big steps can be necessary.
The current car has a 4.0L flat-six engine that makes 470 hp. It could make more, but the series use restrictors to balance performance. The new RSR could use an evolution of the same engine, but since Porsche's lineup is going more and more turbocharged with every new model, a turbo is possible here as well.
