With the Model S P100D, Tesla has moved the bar from Ludicrous mode to full-on plaid. Their claim for the new model is a 0–100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds. Tesla claims that this is the third-fastest-accelerating production car ever produced, and it's the only one that is on sale now. The two faster cars are the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari – both million-dollar cars.
The 100 in the name refers to the 100 kWh battery. The newer, larger pack increases range to 510 km on the EPA test cycle. That makes it the first to pass 500 km of range, and retains the Model S' title as longest-range production EV. Possibly even more impressive than the 0–100 km/h time is their quoted passing time (72 km/h to 105 km/h) of just 1.2 seconds. That will get you around any slow-moving traffic in a hurry.
If you need more space, but still need to peel your face off at every stoplight, the Model X SUV is also available with the new P100D pack. In the larger X, 0–100 km/h slows to just 2.9 seconds and the range drops to about 470 km.
If you've already ordered a P90D Ludicrous, upgrades are available to the 100D package. If you haven't taken delivery, it will cost about $10,000 (USD). If you have your car already, the price doubles.
