Steering Column Fault Prompts Recall of Chevrolet Malibu, Buick Verano

General Motors is recalling some of its Chevrolet Malibu and Buick Verano sedans to replace steering column components that could allow the key to be removed from the ignition when the vehicle is not in "park".

GM says that in 1,305 cars, a part called an "electronic park lock" lever may have been damaged during vehicle assembly. Allowing the key to be pulled from the ignition without requiring the transmission to be in "park" could cause a rollaway if the driver leaves the vehicle that way.

GM is instructing its dealers to inspect the 2016 and 2016 model year vehicles affected by the recall and to replace the ignition lock cylinder where necessary.
