Kia Recalls Improperly Assembled Seatbelt Assemblies

Kia and Transport Canada have announced a recall of 390 Forte models from the 2013 model year to fix seatbelt retractor assemblies that weren't properly fastened to the car during assembly.

By necessity, seatbelts and the mechanical components like the retractor and pre-tensioner (which tightens the belt when vehicle sensors indicate a crash might be imminent) are built tough, but like any in a car, a poorly-installed seatbelt won't do much good. The worry here is that retaining plate could break in a crash, come free from the car's structure and become a dangerous projectile, potentially injuring the car's occupants. Kia's dealers will inspect and replace the seatbelt assembly as necessary.
