The Sounds of Adventure

Summer is the season for road trips. And with road trips, you’ve just got to have a soundtrack. Whether you’re driving alone, just you and your special person, or with a carload of friends and family, music will make the trip feel quicker and more enjoyable. No matter if it’s classic rock, classical music or a classroom podcast, your vehicle becomes a rolling soundstage and possible karaoke room all in one.

Mitsubishi Motors knows the importance of a road-trip soundtrack. For its updated 2025 Outlander, the automaker partnered with legendary audio company Yamaha for an all-new sound system, with a focus on an elevated acoustic experience that rivals high-end home entertainment units. If music is at all a part of your adventures, the Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate system found in the 2025 Outlander GT S-AWC and GT Premium S-AWC is worth a listen.

The technical specs alone of this Yamaha system are impressive. It uses 12 speakers in total: four tweeters in the cabin hit the high notes; three mid-range squawkers for the midtones, and four door-mounted woofers for the low range, both of which utilize one of the world’s strongest synthetic fibres, ZYLON. (Not only is ZYLON lightweight, but it’s also thermally stable, which is important for fluctuating Canadian seasons.) And finally, a giant 200mm subwoofer in the rear of the vehicle ensures deep, smooth bass. Two amplifiers produce a total output of 1,650W and are managed by Yamaha’s Digital Sound Processor. Every instrument comes through clearly, from brash bellows of a bagpipe to subtle wisps of a flute. And every word of your podcasts will be unmistakeable, too.

And yet, as impressive as that is, there’s so much more to the Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate system, with features that just make sense for your road trip. First of all, it’s all controlled through a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen that also features a physical volume knob – with another volume toggle on the steering wheel – making it easier for you to jack the sound when your favourite song comes on. The system sports AM/FM, Sirius XM 360L, Bluetooth and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you and your companions will have plenty of options for music sources.

And there are also innovative technologies to make the sound experience even more immersive and tailored to your tastes. Of course, you can adjust the bass, treble and mid-levels to your liking, but it also features four selectable sound types to easily suit your listening choices: Signature, Lively, Powerful, and Relaxing. You can even tailor the system to focus its sound on specific passengers, whether it’s a lone driver, a front passenger, the front or rear seats, or the whole interior. It really is smart enough to “move” the sound around the cabin, so you don’t waste a note.

Speaking of smart, it also includes systems specifically designed for driving. Speed Compensated Volume not only increases the volume according to your vehicle’s speed, but it also enhances the bass accordingly and offers five driver-selectable levels. And there are two features that aren’t found on any other vehicle in North America that are directly designed for the weather you may find along your travels …

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

No one loves driving in the rain, but it’s a fact of life, even on your ideal road trip. And you wouldn’t think it affects your music, but Mitsubishi Motors and Yamaha have taken steps to make sure it doesn’t: the Rain Compensated Volume feature automatically adjusts the volume and mid/high frequencies when the windshield wipers are set to high, to make sure you don’t miss a beat or tweet. And for those hotter drives, the Air-conditioning Compensated Volume feature does the same, but it’s based on airflow through the Outlander’s outlets. These are features that make subtle but discernable differences in the quality of your sound experience. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a company like Yamaha would think about the driving experience itself when designing a car audio system.

In fact, this is a sound system developed by true audiophiles, for audiophiles. The Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate was designed specifically for the Mitsubishi Outlander, and it’s available just in time for summer road-trip season. Let the adventure – and the music – begin!
