Tackle winter with Mitsubishi SUVs

For some people, winter is a time of dread; they’d rather stay under the covers than deal with the cold, bleak and barren season. But not everyone feels that way.

For many, it’s a genuine winter wonderland! It’s the time to get out for their favourite cold-weather sports: skiing, skating, hockey, curling, snowshoeing, or even just making a snowman. Hey, it’s only cold if you’re standing still, right?

Of course, there are things to make it more comfortable in the icy climes. Layers, as they say; proper clothing will keep the chill down. A nice hot chocolate now and again will keep the spirits up too. And, of course, driving a Mitsubishi SUV.

While that last bit may at first seem a little confusing, it’s really not when you see how Mitsubishi has designed features into its SUV lineup to help make winter safer and more comfortable for those who refuse to stay indoors.

All-Wheel Control (AWC)

First off, you need to get to the frozen lake, ski trails, curling club or ice rink safely, even through the worst snowstorms. Mitsubishi has developed world-class all-wheel-drive systems that are ideal for tackling the most brutal of Canadian winters.

The RVR, Mitsubishi’s subcompact crossover, sports All-Wheel Control (AWC), an all-wheel-drive system that continuously monitors the road and transfers power and braking to the wheels with the most traction. Coupled with a good set of winter tires (a must for any vehicle), the RVR will get you there, whether it’s the rink, the park or even the office.

Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC)

For even more sure-footedness, the Eclipse Cross, Outlander and Outlander PHEV boast the automaker’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). Born from Mitsubishi’s successful rally racing program, S-AWC also monitors the road and vehicle driver inputs, but on top of transferring power front to back, it can also manage torque side to side for even more control on icy roads.

Vehicles with S-AWC are normally driven with the front wheels only for better fuel economy. But when the myriad of sensors detects wheel slip, the rear wheels engage in milliseconds for added traction. It monitors wheel spin, driver input and vehicle dynamics to put the traction and torque where it needs to be, for the ultimate in driving confidence in the worst of weather.

S-AWC also features driver-selectable modes that change the characteristics of the vehicle to better suit the environment. Among them, Snow mode makes the Outlander, Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross even better suited to snowy travels, especially when getting off the plowed tarmac to reach the trailhead or ski chalet.

Modern driving aids

Other features are there to better enhance winter driving safety too. Every Mitsubishi SUV benefits from modern driving aids, such as Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Mitigation. Other available features across the range include Adaptive Cruise Control, and even MI-PILOT Assist, Mitsubishi’s advanced driver assist system that offers semi-autonomous driving.

More features such as windshield washer de-icers, headlight washers, and heated mirrors increase the driver’s visibility and, therefore, safety. In the ice and snow, every little bit counts.

If you’re behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi SUV, you’ve got no excuse not to enjoy winter to the fullest. Of course, you also have the option of a good sleep-in on frosty mornings, too, but it’s good to know you’ve got a Mitsubishi waiting in the driveway.
