Getting the most out of your Outlander PHEV

As the first all-wheel-drive SUV available with a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has set a high bar when it comes to electrified vehicles. Along with a gas-powered, 2.4L engine, it has two electric motors and a 20 kWh battery, which offers up to 61 kilometres of electric range that could theoretically cover your daily drives. And there are a few things you can do to get the most out of this innovative and efficient technology.

Remember Your ABCs

That’s right: Always Be Charging. If you want to take full advantage of the PHEV drivetrain, plugging in is the best way to do it. Having a Level 2 charger at home will ensure you have a full battery every morning. And if you can plug in during the day – say, at the office, or the grocery store – you can extend your all-electric driving even more. If you need a quicker charge, the Outlander PHEV is the only plug-in electric hybrid on the market that is capable of Level 3 DC fast charging, getting up to 80 per cent battery charge from empty in just under 40 minutes. Keep in mind that the Outlander PHEV also features regenerative braking, which adds power back to your battery every time you slow down.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Here Are a Few Other Ways to Maximize That Electric Range:

  • Pre-heating or pre-cooling the interior of the Outlander PHEV in your driveway before your commute while it’s still plugged in takes the load off the drive battery. In fact, you can schedule your Outlander PHEV to charge at off-peak hours and pre-condition the cabin on its own, either through the car’s infotainment system or with the available My Mitsubishi Connect smartphone app
  • Instead of heating up the whole cabin during your drive, use the more efficient heated steering wheel and seat warmers to save energy. As a bonus, they’ll help keep that takeout pizza warm on the drive home
  • Selecting Eco from the S-AWC driver selectable modes means the Outlander PHEV will emphasize efficiency without sacrificing driveability or control.
  • Proper tire inflation means less rolling resistance, so keep them filled to the proper levels
  • Remove excess weight from the cabin (do you really need to keep those workout dumbbells in the cargo area?). More weight means more work for those electric motors
  • Avoid sharp acceleration, which drains the battery more quickly
  • Instead of standing on the brake pedal for every stop, softer braking is not only more comfortable but will also allow for more brake regeneration that puts power back into the battery. Use the paddle shifters to select maximum brake regen, which also offers the convenience of one-pedal driving

Frugal Fuel Economy ...

The Outlander PHEV offers the best of both worlds: it’s capable of covering daily commutes on electricity only, but having the 2.4L engine allows for longer trips with the convenience of a gasoline-powered car. And yet, Natural Resource Canada rates the Outlander PHEV’s overall fuel economy at just 3.6 Le/100 km, which is roughly half that of a comparable, gas-only SUV.

... And More!

And yet, on top of the great fuel economy, you still have a vehicle that fills the needs of just about every family in Canada.

A comfortable, inviting cabin features three rows of seating and up to 1,822L of cargo space. The MI-PILOT Assist suite of available advanced driver assist systems, such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition, among others, act as an extra set of eyes and ears to help make the drive easier and safer. Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), one of the most advanced all-wheel-drive systems available today, blends performance with safety and works to keep your Outlander PHEV on the road in all types of weather.
