Gamechanger: PHEV Camping

It’s finally summer, when Canadians love to shed their winter blahs and get out into nature for some camping and outdoor recreation. This country has millions of acres of wilderness, but you don’t have to portage through mosquito-infested forests to “get away from it all”; for most of us, driving up to a provincial campsite for a weekend of swimming and campfires with family and friends is a great way to relax in the warmer months.

The beauty of this is that you don’t need a giant 4x4 or pickup truck to get there, but there is one SUV that would make your camping or cottage life so much easier and more enjoyable. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV may not be the vehicle you think of when it comes to off-the-path adventure, but I’ve got five good reasons why this is what you need for Canadian camping summers.

The Possibility of All-Electric Travel

The Outlander PHEV is a true plug-in hybrid, and with its 20 kWh lithium-ion main drive battery, the mid-sized SUV has an electric range of 61 km. For most people that’s enough to cover their daily commutes for work, groceries, school runs, etc., but what you may not realize is that it’s also enough to get you out of the city for a country and camping adventure. Don’t believe us? Here’s a list of some major Canadian centres and where you can go on electrons alone.

  • From: Vancouver (B.C. Place stadium) To: Porteau Cove Campground, 44.6 km
  • From: Calgary (Scotiabank Saddledome) To: Ghost Lake Recreations, 58.4 km
  • From: Toronto (Yonge and Dundas) To:Bruce Mills Conservation Area, 40.9 km
  • From: Ottawa (Parliament Hill) To: Fitzroy Provincial Park, 60.5 km
  • From: Montreal (McGill University) To: Oka National Park, 58.5 km
  • From: Halifax (Halifax Citadel) To: Dollar Lake Provincial Park, 52.9 km
  • From: St. John’s (Terry Fox Memorial on Water Street) To: Butter Pot Provincial Park, 40.5 km.

You get the idea. Plus, you can charge that battery at any campsite with electrical hookups: 120V Level 1 charging will top the battery to full in around 16 hours. But for those who really want to get out into the wild, don’t worry: the Outlander PHEV has a total range of 687 kilometres with its 2.4L engine, 56-litre fuel tank and 20 kWh battery.

There Are Other Uses for That Battery …

If you’ve got the power, why not use it? In fact, the Outlander PHEV not only has 1,500 W of electricity from its drive battery, it also features two 120V household outlets in the rear. So you can bring some appliances along with you well off the beaten path to make your time a little more civilized:

  • Coffee maker, to make those mornings more bearable (550 W-1,200 W)
  • Hot plate, for when the rain fizzles the fire (1,200 W)
  • Slow cooker, to put dinner on while you’re in the lake (up to 320 W)
  • Camp lights, for a low glow to your evening (50 W)
  • Toy inflator, because you prefer floating over swimming (150 W)
  • Small refrigerator, to keep the bevvies cool (100 W)
  • Movie projector, to watch the stars under the stars (100 W)
  • Charging e-bikes, to take the trails (500 W)

You might have your own ideas for items you can’t live without on your camping adventures. Which brings us to the next point …

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Space for Your Gear

Of course, part of the fun of camping is the gear; the tents, sleeping bags, and aforementioned electrical accoutrements. But then you need the space to take it all along with your passengers, and there’s another hallmark of the Outlander PHEV.

Of course, with an available third row of seating, you can take up to seven passengers on your camp quests. There is 362 L of cargo space behind that third row; folding that gives 872 L of room, and with all the seats folded, there’s a whopping 1,832 L of available space to cram your cargo.

Need more room for your toys? The Outlander PHEV gives you up to 1,500 lbs of towing capacity, perfect for a small camping trailer or your personal watercraft.

A cozy place to stay

With both the second and third rows of seats folding flat, you could actually throw a couple sleeping bags there for a good night’s sleep instead of setting up a tent, for when the rain is pouring down or even if you feel a little lazy. A heat pump means you can warm up the cabin on cooler nights without turning on the engine for emissions- and noise-free comfort. And an available panoramic sunroof will let you fall asleep watching the stars overhead.

The Power to Get You Off the Beaten Path

Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) is one of the best all-wheel-drive systems available. The Outlander PHEV’s version uses two electric motors and the 2.4L gas engine in tandem for on-demand AWD when the conditions get slippery. The driver also gets seven selectable drive modes to enhance the vehicle’s performance for specific road conditions, such as snow, mud, or rain. It’s sure-footed protection to keep you in control and your passengers safe.

With all these features, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is more than just an urban explorer. This efficient, spacious, and stylish SUV could also be your weekend warrior when it comes to enjoying Canada’s wilderness camping paradise. Just don’t forget the bug spray.
