SANTA FE can do it

All new last year, the Hyundai SANTA FE has been redefining the family SUV segment with its rugged looks, stylish and modern interior and a host of innovative technology and features inside for both safety and convenience. In fact, it’s been so impressive it was named Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, among many other worldwide accolades, so you know automotive professionals have taken notice.

But beyond the stand-out styling, how does the whole SANTA FE package fit with Canadian families? We talked with some who had questions about Hyundai’s latest family SUV; we have the answers …

We’re a large family, and everyone has hobbies and sports. Can the Santa Fe fit it all?
- Kathy T., Cobourg, ON

You’ll be surprised at what you can take in the SANTA FE. With a new rugged and boxy design, the SUV features three rows of seating for up to seven passengers; standard power folding second-row seats help passengers get to the back, too. There are 413 litres of cargo behind the third row, or fold those for an impressive 1,148 L behind the second row. A wide rear cargo door also has  a standard Smart Power Liftgate for easier loading. And for your bigger toys, you can tow up to 4,500 lbs (XRT only).

I need the extra space, but I’ve never driven an SUV that size. How does it drive?
- Adam L., Dartmouth, NS

The SANTA FE doesn’t feel like a larger SUV on the road; steering is weighted just right, and the suspension is tuned for comfort but still controls well in the corners. You have two choices for power, with an available 2.5-litre turbocharged engine that delivers 277 hp; read on for the second powertrain choice …

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Is there a green option?
- Dario L., Montreal, QC

As a matter of fact, the SANTA FE’s two base trims come standard with a hybrid powertrain, mating a 1.6L turbocharged engine with an electric motor and a 1.49 kWh battery. It all combines for 231 hp, but more impressively it returns a fuel economy of just 6.9 L/100 km combined, the equivalent of much smaller vehicles on the market. You’ll see the difference at the pumps.

Our cottage is far and tricky to get to, can the SANTA FE get us there?
- Frank P., Kelowna, BC

Sure it can! Every SANTA FE comes with HTRAC all-wheel drive, Hyundai’s advanced system that monitors multiple input signals more than 100 times per second to distribute power to the wheels that need it, for superior traction. For even more sure-footed performance, the system also features multi-terrain, driver-selectable control modes that include Snow, Mud and Sand.

We’ve heard about Hyundai’s reputation for building safe vehicles. How’s the safety in the SANTA FE?
- Laura C., Gimli, MB

The SANTA FE is built on Hyundai’s proprietary Superstructure, a chassis built with advanced high-strength steel and designed to absorb crash energies and direct them away from the passenger compartment. On top of that, the SANTA FE comes standard with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of electronic driver aids including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian, Cyclist and Junction-Turning Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind-spot Collision Warning, and others. Other systems, such as Blind-spot Collision Avoidance Assist, are also available.

We do a lot of road trips, so entertainment is important. What does the SANTA FE offer?
- Ganesha R., Toronto

It starts with the standard 12.3-inch infotainment display with standard wireless phone projection (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), HD radio and Sirius XM, Bluetooth hands-free phone system and available wireless phone charging pad (navigation and Dual Wireless Charging Pads are also available). An available 12-speaker Bose Premium Sound System will rock the tunes, while two 12-volt outlets and an available 115-volt outlet will keep larger devices running. Up to six USB ports let everyone plug in and stay connected.

Is there anything that will surprise us about the SANTA FE?
- Brenda B., Calgary, AB

You bet there is. The SANTA FE comes with features you may not expect in a family SUV; or any vehicle, for that matter. A giant, multi-console storage unit between the front seats has a lid that can be opened from both front and back for easier access from anyone. And on the outside, available hidden grab handles in the C pillars help with access to the roof racks. You’ll find more pleasant surprises like these everywhere.

In redesigning the mid-sized SANTA FE, Hyundai focussed on space, comfort and utility, but didn’t forget about style and technology. When it comes to what families prioritize the most, the Hyundai SANTA FE answers all the questions.
