Hyundai redefining family travel with the IONIQ 9

As a leader in the EV realm, Hyundai already offers two fully electric SUVs: the IONIQ 5 and the Kona Electric. And now, it’s ready to release its all-new, all-electric vehicle: the three-row IONIQ 9, expected to redefine the family electric SUV segment. And according to Steven Burke, Senior Product Planner with Hyundai Canada, the IONIQ 9, it’s not just about size: technology, utility and features are what will set this Ioniq 9 apart from the crowd.

“It’s built for families looking for a sophisticated, spacious, innovative vehicle that fulfills their daily needs while making their ride comfortable and functional,”says Burke. “It Includes all of Hyundai’s highest level of comfort and convenience features, safety tech, and connectivity”

He Lists the Three Main Pillars of the New IONIQ 9:

“Space: With seating for up to seven passengers and still generous space in the cargo area, this is an EV that is suited for families.

“Luxury: Loaded with all of Hyundai’s cutting-edge technology and convenience features, this vehicle is comfort, safety, and luxury for all three rows.

“Range: With a class-leading all-electric range of up to 539 km, and with a native NACS charging port and an included CCS adapter, customers will be able to access the broadest charging infrastructure. Range anxiety is not a concern.”

While some details of the IONIQ 9 are being reserved for its release later this year, we do know a few things: along with that available, class-leading 539-km range, every trim level of the SUV will get more than 500 km. Burke reveals it is built on Hyundai’s e-GMP EV platform with 800V architecture, allowing for ultra-fast charging of its 110.3-kWh battery. The range is also achieved with an emphasis on aerodynamic design (streamlined silhouette, underbody and active aero) and weight reduction (application of aluminum body panels) for more efficient driving.

The immediate draw of the IONIQ 9 is undeniably its standout design, both inside and out. “The ‘Aerosthetic’ exterior design blends aerodynamic innovation and sophisticated, futuristic styling,” says Burke. “The emphasis is on flushness to create a streamlined look and low drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.269.

“A boat-tail rear end (from top) gives it a muscular appearance, while a ‘Hanbok’ line along the side (after the traditional Korean clothing), marries the flush front-end design with the athletic rear-end design. A Parametric-pixel design language is consistent with previous IONIQ models, now with even more pixels!”

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Inside, the Natural Lounge interior design provides a sense of balance in simplicity, with elliptical themes and soft, calming shapes defined by nature. As well, Burke says that the IONIQ 9 was designed to “emphasize sustainability in its material choices. These include Eco Process Leather, Recycled PET Fabric, Wool Fabric, Bio TPO/PU Skin, Bio PET/SUEDE Fabric, and Bio Paint.”

Drivers and passengers won’t be let down by the drive, either. “The IONIQ 9 will sport a comfortable, refined experience for all three-rows of passengers, with a quiet yet powerful EV powertrain and many complementary technologies and features,” says Burke. Sound-absorbing tires that minimize tire resonance, acoustic-laminated glass, and the electronic Active Noise Control – Road (ANC-R) feature will help with the serene experience, while available relaxation seats for first- and second-row passengers with heated and ventilated seating are there for even more comfort.

The IONIQ 9’s 3,130-mm wheelbase is the largest in Hyundai’s history; that opens up the interior for plenty of space for up to seven passengers and their cargo. There’s up to 620 L of space behind the third row, and 1,323 L with the third row folded. A flat floor gives passengers plenty of legroom, too.

As you’d expect, technology is a major feature overall in this ground-breaking SUV. For safety, it incorporates Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of electronic driver aids, including Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 2, Lane Following Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, among many others. It will also feature an in-cabin camera with Forward Attention Warning.

Convenience and entertainment features include Standard Bluelink connected car system for integration and communication with your smartphone or smart watch, Hyundai Digital Key 2 Premium with UWB, NFC, and BLE communication and seven USB-C ports with up to 100 W of charging capacity.

Burke says Canadians will also appreciate some features key for our climate and driving. “Standard equipment is a Heat Pump & Battery Preconditioning System for efficient use in the cold, winter conditions. Plus, a Rear Independent HVAC system is for more efficient power use for front and rear controlled climates, as well as a Rear HVAC only mode for car camping.”

These are only a few of the details on the IONIQ 9, and they’re already impressive. Hyundai will release the full story when this all-electric SUV hits Canadian showrooms later this year, and we can’t wait.
