Keeping It All in the Family

Can you believe that 2025 marks 35 years of the Hyundai ELANTRA on Canadian roads? The compact sedan has been a stalwart in the segment, with a history of value, quality and innovation that has only increased over time. The latest generation carries on this legacy; it’s a car with a leading-edge design that also offers good performance and a long list of desirable features.

But here’s the thing: it’s not just one car. With variations in powertrains and features, the ELANTRA has become an entire family of vehicles, with options to suit many different needs. Just like a real family, they all may look similar to each other, but they also have very different personalities. Let’s see which one fits your personality.

The Go-Getter

Every family has the reliable, dependable person who calmly makes sense in every situation. The gas-powered ELANTRA, even in the base Essential form, is that family member.

The ELANTRA is one of the best values when it comes to a new car in Canada. Starting at under $23,000, it still comes with a list of features not even available on more expensive vehicles. For one thing, the 2.0L four-cylinder engine with Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission delivers class-leading fuel economy* with a combined 6.8L/100 km, so you’re saving money even after you’ve saved money on the initial purchase.

But the value doesn’t end there. The ELANTRA comes standard with Hyundai’s advanced SmartSense suite of electronic driving aids to help keep you safe on the road.

Inside, heated front seats, a six-speaker audio system with wired or wireless phone projection (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and steering wheel-mounted audio controls are also standard, among many other features. But moving up to the Preferred Tech opens up even more features, which add to the SmartSense suite as well as more luxury touches such as premium cloth seats, ambient lighting, an available 10.25-inch digital display instrument cluster, available 10.25-inch touch-screen infotainment system, and so many more.

And don’t forget, even the base ELANTRA benefits from Hyundai’s generous warranties, starting with a five-year, 100,000km comprehensive limited warranty, and including a five-year, 100,000km powertrain warranty, five-year, unlimited kilometre roadside assistance program, and even an eight-year, 130,000km major emission warranty. So, you also get peace of mind with every ELANTRA.

The Newschool

Of course, every family has the one with more modern thinking, who appreciates technology and new ideas. That would be the ELANTRA Hybrid.

The Hybrid takes everything good about the ELANTRA sedan, but packs it with a technologically advanced hybrid system for better fuel efficiency and cleaner driving. A 1.6L engine is combined with a 32 kW electric motor and 1.32 kWh battery to make 139 hp and a tire-chirping 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The battery is charged with regenerative braking – no need to plug in at any time. Power is transmitted through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), while a multi-link rear suspension contributes to a smoother ride.

But you’ll really see the difference the ELANTRA Hybrid makes with your gas bills. The electrified four-door gets a combined 4.7 L/100 km fuel economy rating from Natural Resources Canada – that’s a best-in-class rating* for the compact hybrid sedan segment.

On top of the already lengthy list of Hyundai SmartSense features, the Hybrid adds even more, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop-and-go capability and Highway Driving Assist, which take a load off the driver on longer journeys.

But efficient driving and added safety doesn’t mean you miss out on the luxuries. The ELANTRA Hybrid also comes standard with a Bose eight-speaker audio system, wireless smartphone charging pad, leatherette seating surfaces, proximity keyless entry with push-button ignition and remote start, and Bluelink smartphone connectivity, which lets you remotely lock, unlock or even start the car, check its diagnostics, and other features. That’s all on top of everything you get with the gas-powered ELANTRA.

And in addition to all the other Hyundai warranty coverage, the Hybrid also gets an electric vehicle system warranty: eight years and 160,000km coverage for the entire electrified powertrain.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

The Thrill Seeker

Then there’s the one in the family who craves a little excitement without sacrificing style or comfort. That’s the ELANTRA N Line.

For the N Line, Hyundai didn’t just add a racing stripe or a fancy badge and call it a day. The car’s performance bona fides start under the hood with a turbocharged, 1.6L engine making a hot 201 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s mated to a seven-speed DCT with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, so you can upshift your own gears under hard acceleration or downshift in the corners.

And speaking of corners, the N Line also gets upgrades to make those even more fun. A sophisticated independent, multi-link rear suspension highlights an overall sportier suspension setup, while a motor-driven sport power steering system gives you better control in the twisties.

And even though it keeps its stylish ELANTRA family looks, the N Line gets a little makeover to let you know it’s the bad boy of the brood. A unique front fascia and glossy black grille, twin-tip exhaust, rear spoiler and special 18-inch alloy wheels make for a sporty look. The interior gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and N Line sport leather seats with red stitching. And the Drive Mode Select lets you change vehicle parameters for the powertrain, steering and stability control to fine tune your N Line performance depending on your driving mood, with settings for Normal, Sport, Sport+ and custom.

But don’t worry; besides the performance and style upgrades, the N Line still offers the same comfort and luxury as anyone else in the ELANTRA family.

The beauty of families is that different personalities complement each other, making the family richer and more well-rounded. Hyundai has made the ELANTRA into a family of compact sedans that offers something for almost anyone, offering top-tier value for Canadians and choices to suit your lifestyle.
