EV Mythbusting 101

If you’ve done some online research on electrified vehicles (EVs), chances are you’ve come up against the naysayers, the ones who complain about everything electric. It can be intimidating, confusing and downright discouraging, especially if you’re new to the EV world.

Fear not, EV newcomers; we’ve got the real information and answers when it comes to your general questions. And what better source for information than from Hyundai, which offers one of the most expansive electrified line-ups on the market. With four battery electric vehicles (BEVs), one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and three hybrids, Hyundai should know the ins and outs of electrified vehicles.

Let’s start knocking down five major myths about EVs:

EVs in Winter

Contrary to some people’s beliefs, electric vehicles are well suited for winter. Hyundai’s BEVs use innovative heat pumps to warm the cabin; heat pumps work efficiently by absorbing external heat to warm the cabin with minimal power loss from the battery. They also feature an advanced battery thermal management system to help get the most range in colder weather. And of course, almost every Hyundai electrified vehicle is available with sure-footed all-wheel drive to get you safely through the snow and ice.

EV Performance

Anyone who thinks that electric cars are boring have obviously not got behind the wheel of a Hyundai EV. And they especially haven’t checked out the Ioniq 5 N, an all-electric car with outrageous performance. Born from Hyundai’s N performance division based at the famed Nürburgring racetrack, the Ioniq 5 N boasts up to a whopping 641 horsepower and 568 lb.-ft. of torque, and can reach 100 km/h in under four seconds. With performance features such as N e-Shift (simulating an eight-speed gearbox), electronic limited slip differential, electronic control suspension and special aerodynamics, the Ioniq 5 N is just as comfortable clipping apexes as it is picking up groceries.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Electric Range

People who say that may not think about their own driving habits. Consider this: according to Natural Resources Canada, the average long commuting distance for Canadians is 57 kilometres. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 can reach up to 550 km, the Ioniq 5 can go up to 504 km, the Kona Electric up to 420 km and the Ioniq 5 N up to 356 km. Even if you factor in dropping off and picking up the kids, a grocery shop or even a weekend away, there is more than enough range. And with more than 80 per cent of EV owners charging from home*, they have a fresh, full battery every morning.

Charging an EV

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 are all built with 800-volt charging infrastructure, meaning they can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes with a Level 3 DC fast charger. Even the Kona Electric can get to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes, which is around the time you’d spend in the mall or at a restaurant. Regardless, most EV owners charge bit by bit when they’re away from home, simply because they don’t always need a full battery, and then charge fully overnight at home, when they’re asleep and when electricity prices are at their lowest.

The Real Costs of EVs

When you factor in the savings of electricity over gasoline costs in the long run, the slightly higher initial cost of an EV begins to make sense. And Hyundai has also priced almost every one of its BEVs and PHEVs to qualify for provincial EV rebates to help make it easier to put an electrified vehicle in your driveway, adding up to thousands of dollars saved.

The more you know, the easier it is to see that electric vehicles make sense for more Canadian drivers than you’d think; maybe even yourself.
