Preview: 2027 Kia EV3 Expands Automaker’s Electric Lineup

Kia is continuing its electric vehicle offensive with an intriguing new crossover.

Electric vehicle (EV) interest may be waning, but that isn’t slowing Kia’s product offensive, with yet another intriguing — if contentiously styled — model set to join the lineup.

The 2027 Kia EV3 is a subcompact crossover similar in size to the Seltos, which was recently redesigned, and has a look similar to the slightly larger EV5 that’s also on its way to Canada. Much like that model, there will be two batteries to choose between: a 58.3-kWh unit unique to the base trim, or an 81.4-kWh pack that can also be combined with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.

The brand says the smaller of the two batteries will offer an estimated range of 354 km, while the bigger one should provide as much as 482 km on a full charge. All-wheel drive will likely push that number closer to 450 km or so, although official estimates weren’t made available as of this writing.

Like its siblings, including the EV5 as well as the EV4 small sedan and EV9 three-row SUV, the EV3 is built on a 400-volt architecture that means the benchmark 10-to-80 per cent battery boost should take about half an hour in ideal conditions. It also means this crossover is capable of bidirectional charging that allows it to power small household and outdoor items like laptops and camping equipment.

Like the rest of the latest models in Kia’s lineup, it uses twin 12.3-inch displays — one for infotainment, the other for drive-related information — with a small climate panel between them. The cabin is a relatively minimalist space otherwise, with simple shapes repeated on the dash, doors, and console.

The exterior styling is slightly more controversial, with an overall shape that’s similar to the EV5’s, albeit with elements that don’t translate quite as well with these smaller proportions — particularly in a high-contrast colour scheme like the white and black look pictured here. But then the rear lights accentuate the shape of the back end rather nicely, going without the claw-like look of the EV4’s.

The 2027 Kia EV3 is expected to arrive at Canadian dealers this fall. Expect pricing closer to launch.
