A good set of winter tires transforms any car in the cold. Still, not everyone wants to wrestle a fast rear-drive sports car through a snowy on-ramp. That’s who this list is for. Enthusiasts who want one fun car for track days and snowy commutes alike.

Sending power to the front wheels as well as the rear wheels makes an AWD sports car easier to live with in slippery conditions. Some of them also seat four or five, which is handy when the weekend toy doubles as a daily driver.

Defining a sports car is tricky. It has to be quick and fun to drive, and it has to send power to all four wheels. Since this is our list, we also decided what counts.

AWD coupes make the cut, from a compact sports coupe to a grand touring two-door. So do the hot hatch crowd and one small sedan with a rally pedigree. Bigger four-door sports sedans don’t. Once a car grows past compact size, it’s a sports sedan, and that’s a different list. Crossovers are out, and we stopped short of six-figure exotics.

Best Options or Setup: Every AWD Sports Car on Sale

Here are the best AWD sports cars you can buy, roughly from lowest price tag to highest.

Subaru WRX

The rally legend of the 1990s is still the entry point to good AWD sports cars. Some things don’t change. The Subaru WRX uses a turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine making 271 hp, and Subaru’s Symmetrical Full-Time AWD is standard on every trim. There’s no STI in the 2026 Canadian lineup, but you can still get a six-speed manual.

Toyota GR Corolla and Volkswagen Golf R

The GR Corolla is a proper hot hatch. Its 1.6L turbocharged three-cylinder makes 300 hp and 295 lb-ft, and the GR-FOUR system lets you adjust the torque split with a dial.

The Golf R answers with a 2.0L turbo four, 328 hp and a torque-vectoring rear differential, and VW Canada lists it only with a seven-speed DSG.

AWD Sport Coupes: Charger, M240i and CLE 53

The Charger leads the all-wheel-drive coupes and takes the Challenger GT’s spot from our old list. Every 2026 Dodge Charger has all-wheel drive, and the Sixpack R/T makes 420 hp from a 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six; the Scat Pack makes 550 hp. Dodge has more planned for the Sixpack Charger lineup.

BMW Canada’s current page rates the M240i xDrive Coupé at 386 hp and 398 lb-ft from a turbocharged inline-six with a small electric assist, and 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. Earlier builds were rated at 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, so check the model year on any car you shop. The luxury pick is Mercedes. Every 2027 CLE Coupe uses 4MATIC, and the AMG CLE 53’s inline-six makes 443 hp.

Porsche 911 and Corvette E-Ray: Top-End Performance

For 2027, Porsche Canada lists these all-wheel-drive 911s:

  1. Carrera 4S and Targa 4S, with a 3.0L twin-turbo flat-six making 473 hp.
  2. Carrera 4 GTS and Targa 4 GTS, with a 3.6L eTurbo hybrid flat-six making 532 hp combined.
  3. Turbo S, with a 3.6L twin eTurbo hybrid flat-six making 701 hp combined.

Capability and Practicality: Seats, Doors and Gearboxes

The most practical sporty AWD cars are the hatchbacks and the WRX. The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla hatchback seats five, and the 2026 Subaru WRX has four doors and a trunk. The Charger comes as a two-door or a four-door, and the E-Ray as a coupe or a convertible.

Canadian Seasonal Considerations: Winter Tires Still Matter

All-wheel drive helps you pull away from a snowy light. It doesn’t help you stop on ice. Braking grip comes from the tires, so budget for snow tires as part of the purchase. CAA National says winter tires can provide up to 50 per cent more traction than all-season tires.

In Quebec, it isn’t optional. The SAAQ requires winter tires on Quebec-registered vehicles from Dec. 1 to March 15 inclusive, with a fine of $200 to $300 plus costs. The SAAQ also notes that summer and all-season rubber hardens below 7°C.

Tips: Shopping New or Used

Some AWD coupes now only come used. Infiniti lists 2022 as the final model year of the Q60, one of our 2019 picks. Lexus Canada ended the RC coupe in December 2025.
