The list of compact crossovers on the market is a long one, and it’s ever improving.

Better still, there’s a variety of choices that range from rugged and utilitarian to surprisingly posh and sporty. The newly introduced 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo fits into the latter category, sharing some characteristics with its sport compact sibling.

Even before firing up the spicier engine under its hood, the Tiguan Turbo endears itself with a handsome appearance. Volkswagen’s designers rarely chase frivolous fashion trends, with designs that age well as a result. That’s certainly the case with the Tiguan that looks chiselled and purposeful without being over the top or cartoonish. The 20-inch wheels this top trim rides on help visually, although they aren’t exactly practical.

The Tiguan’s interior is the real show-stopper, though. This being the range-topping Highline Turbo R-Line, it’s been dolled up with the fanciest features including two-tone brown and black leather with cream-coloured piping. The dashboard has a similar finish, plus a swath of woodgrain that contrasts beautifully against the expanse of black screens.

There’s nothing else in the compact crossover category that comes close to this level of pizazz, and it could be enough to make at least some premium shoppers wonder why they should spend notably more when this VW looks so good.

Equipment: 9/10

There’s substance beyond the style, too. The panoramic sunroof overhead bathes occupants with sunlight, while those up front can bask in heated and cooled seats that also offer a very effective massage function. There’s slick ambient lighting like that found in fancier machines, and the massive 15-inch touchscreen looks like it could hang on the living room wall to watch the big game. Even the stereo delivers solid, crisp sound through its 12 speakers.

Comfort: 7/10

The seats do a wonderful job comforting the Tiguan’s occupants, but they can’t overcome one of this VW’s greatest downfalls: its ride. Those attractive 20-inch wheels mean there’s precious little sidewall on the tires to absorb bumps, and the suspension feels as stiff as the sporty Golf GTI hatchback’s, which means plenty of hard wallops reach the passenger compartment. It also reinforces how crucial a thorough test drive is before any vehicle purchase. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester each deliver a considerably more compliant ride.

On the bright side, the Tiguan does a very good job keeping outside interference out of the cabin with each wind, road, and engine noise decently quelled.

User Friendliness: 7/10

The only other major blemish in the Tiguan experience is its control interface. This has been a point of annoyance for critics and consumers alike for the past several years as Volkswagen went away from traditional buttons and knobs and integrated more features into touchscreens and haptic panels.

Mercifully, VW has brought back proper buttons for the steering wheel controls, and they work brilliantly here. Likewise, while the slider panel for volume and temperature control is tedious, there’s now a large and much-appreciated volume knob on the centre console.

When pressed, that knob doubles as a switch between different “atmospheres” for the drive experience. Those affect the colour of the ambient lighting and volume of the sound system, both of which are trivial, as they can be adjusted on their own.

The instrument display can be customized to present key information, always putting a nice and big tachometer in the centre. The touchscreen presents a dizzying amount of information, with a lot of expandable menus and options.

The biggest complaint comes from this particular tester’s infuriating inability to stay wirelessly connected to an iPhone. Each time the vehicle was started, it was anyone’s guess how long it could maintain contact with the phone, providing a lag-prone, pixilated display in Apple CarPlay before simply dropping the connection and being unwilling to reconnect. The wired connection proved more stable.

Driving Dynamics: 8/10

The upside of the range-topping Tiguan’s very stiff ride is that it gives this compact crossover impressive handling. While it’s not going to hang with the Golf GTI on a winding road, it corners more flatly than softer-sprung competitors from Toyota, Subaru, and Honda, with Mazda’s CX-50 (now in very limited supply thanks to tariffs) being a similarly sporting foil.

The steering is decently quick, and while there isn’t a ton of road feel, the Tiguan is sufficiently rewarding to drive that it shouldn’t feel like a huge performance downgrade for anyone coming out of a car like the Golf GTI.

Braking is strong and linear, and the eight-speed automatic transmission snaps off brisk gear changes when the Tiguan is driven aggressively or the paddle shifters are used. Otherwise, it’s programmed to be in as tall a gear as possible to minimize fuel consumption, sometimes being reluctant to downshift after a modest poke at the throttle.

Powertrain: 8/10

Despite adding “Turbo” to this Tiguan’s name, all current Tiguans are, in fact, turbocharged. Here, the same 2.0L engine gets a bigger turbo and different tuning to up the output from 201 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque to 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. These are very respectable numbers, and they give the Tiguan Turbo decent thrust when passing. Around town, the throttle is calibrated to be a bit snappy, but between the sometimes-reluctant transmission and a brief wait for the turbo to wind up, there’s a non-linear way to how the power comes on, giving some old-school turbo vibes — and not in a necessarily good way.

Efficiency: 7/10

With an average combined fuel consumption rate of 9.5 L/100 km (8.0 on the highway and 10.7 in the city), the Tiguan Turbo is slightly more efficient than the CX-50 Turbo, but falls behind more modest performers like the CR-V, RAV4, and Forester, all of which are available as hybrids. Fortunately, despite the performance of the larger turbo engine, it still runs on regular-grade gas.

Safety: 7/10

Volkswagen fits all Tiguans with a comprehensive suite of passive and active safety features including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam control.

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Tiguan a five-star overall safety rating; however, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found the seatbelt positioning moved enough during its front moderate overlap crash test that rear-seat occupants were at risk, and gave the Tiguan a “Poor” rating for kinematics in that category. Otherwise, the Tiguan received top marks in every other IIHS evaluation.

Everyday Usability: 8/10

Compact is a misleading term these days, since crossovers like the Tiguan offer far more space than that descriptor suggests. And while the overall length of this generation Tiguan is slightly shorter than before, the cabin is very spacious for passengers. The Tiguan isn’t a class leader in any interior measure but it’s competitive in all of them, with rear-seat legroom being particularly impressive. Two grown adults can comfortably fit in the back seat, while a third person could squeeze between them if necessary.

The cargo space is similarly generous if not quite class-leading. With the rear seat up there’s 750 L of volume, which expands to 1,668 L with the seats folded. It should be noted that the Tiguan offers handy little levers in the cargo area to conveniently fold either side forward.

The Tiguan’s 816-kg (1,800-lb) towing capacity betters the meagre capability of the Forester and CR-V, but falls short of the RAV4’s impressive 1,588-kg (3,500-lb) rating.

Value: 8/10

The Trendline trim is the entry point to the Tiguan lineup. All-wheel drive is standard, and it features the smaller turbo engine for a reasonable $39,695 before tax but including freight ($2,200).

There are Comfortline and Comfortline R-Line Black Edition trims that ring in at $43,195 and $46,695, respectively, before reaching the range-topping Highline Turbo R-Line tested here. Buyers wanting the brown leather interior and massaging seats need to splash out for the Turbo model and its $52,195 pre-tax suggested retail price.

Top-tier competitors are all priced similarly, but none offers the combination of performance and poshness of the Tiguan Turbo. Of note, a base Audi Q5 starts at more than $60,000, all of which makes this Tiguan even more compelling.

The Verdict

First impressions of the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Turbo are extremely favourable. The features and finishes are upscale, while its performance is lively enough to give enthusiasts some satisfaction while piloting this family vehicle. Spending a bit of time with the Tiguan reveals its harsh ride, and presents a few concerns about its user interface. If Volkswagen can iron out some of the Tiguan’s electronic glitches (and the roads it travels), it could be a class-leading choice for buyers prioritizing performance and panache.
