2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid First Drive + Video

A smooth and efficient powertrain makes this hybrid feel refined like an EV.

Every automaker needs to ensure a vehicle overhaul goes right, but with the fourth-generation Nissan Rogue, the pressure and urgency are higher.

Nissan has been hit hard by supply disruptions, tariff pressures, an aging lineup, and increased competition, which means much is riding on the Rogue to give Nissan the lift it needs. As the automaker’s most popular model, the Rogue competes with heavy hitters like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson, all of which offer hybrid powertrains.

Nissan has finally added a Rogue Hybrid to the lineup with this new fourth-generation model; but instead of just maintaining the status quo, the new 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid sets a new benchmark for the segment.

A Unique Hybrid System

Dubbed e-Power, Nissan’s hybrid system used in the new Rogue is unique in the segment. Called a series hybrid, it uses an efficient turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine that acts solely as a generator to charge the 1.67-kWh battery, which then powers an electric motor on each axle that drives the wheels.

The gas engine doesn't drive the wheels at all, which is fundamentally different from how other hybrids in the industry operate. Some are called parallel hybrids while the one in the CR-V is almost like a mix of the two types. Either way, the gas engine in those setups both drives the wheels and recharges the battery.

The Rogue’s series hybrid offers multiple benefits without any real downsides. First, it’s mechanically simpler. With no transmission or mechanical linkage between the axles, the electric motors provide standard all-wheel drive without a bulky transmission tunnel or differential, freeing up interior space.

Another benefit is instantaneous acceleration. With no need to wait for turbos to spool, engine revs to climb, or a transmission to sort it all out, the power delivery feels a lot like an electric vehicle (EV): smooth and responsive. Another huge benefit is that the gas engine doesn’t fire up when the battery is charged, so the Rogue Hybrid’s cabin is incredibly quiet, and even when the engine does start, you don’t notice it unless you are really trying.

The Rogue Hybrid offers many of the benefits of an EV — refinement, efficiency, silence, and zippy acceleration, with a total system output of 255 hp — without the required lifestyle change or the need to plug in. With the 53-litre tank full of gas, you should be good to go for more than 850 km before needing to refuel.

And this isn’t some newfangled hybrid system that Nissan is testing. The brand has sold about two million vehicles with a similar series hybrid setup in other markets over the past decade, so it’s a proven powertrain.

Official fuel economy estimates for the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid’s most efficient model are 5.9 L/100 km in the city, 6.6 on the highway, and 6.2 combined. That’s better than the Honda CR-V Hybrid (6.4 combined) but not as efficient as the Toyota RAV4 (5.5 combined); but the Rogue feels more refined and comfortable than both, which is a worthy trade-off. After a day of driving, the 6.2 L/100 km estimate proved realistic and easy to achieve without much effort.

How Does It Drive?

With its silent, smooth powertrain, the Rogue Hybrid offers a composure many of its competitors don’t. Driven quickly through winding, rough, and bumpy roads around Santa Barbara, Calif., it remained quick to react, agile, and unflustered, handling admirably without sacrificing comfort.

The all-wheel-drive system’s performance in a Canadian winter remains to be seen, but the steering, braking, and manoeuvrability are all great, especially with brake-based torque vectoring to help it feel more agile in corners.

The Rogue Hybrid also offers one-pedal driving, letting you come to a complete stop by lifting your foot off the accelerator — another EV-like feature its competitors don’t offer. The energy typically lost while braking is then recouped and used to recharge the battery and improve efficiency.

Adding to the Rogue Hybrid’s already admirable smoothness, a new feature releases a bit of brake pressure as you roll to a stop, reducing head-bobbing or coffee spills, making the ride even smoother and less jarring.

Stylish Outside, Practical Inside

The new Rogue has a fresher, more stylish look than before. The hexagonal pattern on the front bumper and headlights helps it stand out, but the styling from all other angles, while inoffensive, looks pretty generic. New wheels, paint colours, and more design details also help give it a more upscale vibe this time.

The interior also feels a bit more upmarket, though it still has a decent amount of hard black plastic. New customizable ambient lighting and textured trim add colour and life to the cabin, something the CR-V and RAV4 dreadfully lack.

More importantly, the new Rogue was clearly designed with practicality in mind. The rear doors open at a wide 90 degrees, making it easier for parents to install child seats or help a little one get settled, there’s a huge EV-like pass-through storage compartment between the driver and passenger that’s big enough to fit takeout or a bag, and the trunk retains the compartment in the right passenger wheel well that’s perfect for holding a jug of windshield washer fluid. The cabin feels roomier than before, and the trunk is designed to hold three pieces of full-size luggage standing up. The trunk measures 880 L, which expands to 1,866 L with the rear seats folded flat.

There are also physical buttons for climate control. The button panel is all square and hard-back plastic, so it looks a bit dated and cheap, but at this point, with many automakers centralizing functions in touchscreens, I’m grateful there are physical buttons at all because they’re safer and more user-friendly.

The Rogue’s driver information screen and central touchscreen are now housed under a single panel, with higher trims offering a larger touchscreen. A helpful row of shortcuts at the bottom of the display makes navigation easier, and it takes less tapping to complete simple tasks.

The infotainment now runs Google-based software, so Google Maps is the native navigation system, making it more user-friendly. Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant is also available in higher trims, but standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the system even more user-friendly.

The seats are also among the most comfortable outside luxury brands, with Nissan’s “Zero Gravity” seats providing ample support and no pressure points, making long drives less taxing on your body.

Unique Tech

A few useful features help differentiate the new Rogue from its competitors, the main one being an updated version of Nissan’s driver assistance and adaptive cruise control system called ProPilot. The new system supports automatic lane changes and traffic-jam support that lets drivers take their hands off the steering wheel in certain scenarios. The previous system was already segment-leading, and Nissan improved it to make it smoother, more intuitive, and more natural-feeling.

A wireless phone charger is now standard, and its unique raised magnetic design solves two issues. This new system ensures proper placement with tactile confirmation, keeps the phone from moving while driving, and prevents overheating. Higher trims also offer twin wireless chargers.

All the expected advanced safety features like lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring are included, but the new Rogue also has available 360-degree cameras and an “invisible hood” view that helps drivers be more aware of their surroundings, — especially helpful when parking or lining up wheels on a carwash track.

Canadian Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid with standard all-wheel drive starts at $39,998 for the entry-level SV trim, $42,998 for the SV Premium, $47,998 for the SR, and $50,098 for the top Platinum trim (prices don’t include a $2,095 destination fee). This pricing undercuts the CR-V and RAV4 at pretty much every trim level, with only the base Toyota RAV4 being more affordable but also offering a lot less in terms of features and refinement.

The new Rogue Hybrid arrives at Canadian dealerships this fall, while the non-hybrid model will join the lineup later in 2027. The previous-generation Rogue will be sold alongside the new fourth-gen version in 2027 to give drivers on a tighter budget more options until the new non-hybrid model arrives.

Final Thoughts

The 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid checks a lot of boxes and should no longer be considered an afterthought if you’re shopping in this segment. This Rogue Hybrid is finally very competitive and brings something new to the segment. With its practical interior, smooth, refined, efficient powertrain, and many useful features its competitors don’t offer, the new Rogue Hybrid is finally worth considering as a front-runner in the segment.
