Land Rover To Debut "Emotional" Range Rover Coupe In Geneva

Land Rover will use the upcoming Geneva auto show as a launch pad for its newest model, the Range Rover SV Coupe.

The British maker of upscale SUVs and crossovers says the luxurious and stylish new model will, somewhat ironically, help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the introduction of the original Land Rover, a rudimentary off-roader whose prototype was built on a Jeep chassis.

But Land Rover says the Range Rover SV Coupe intends to pay homage to the first Range Rover, the SUV that debuted in 1970 as a two-door model and was sold that way for a decade before gaining a four-door sibling.

The Range Rover SV Coupe may have two fewer doors than most existing members of the current Range Rover family, but it's set to make up for what it loses in utility in style and exclusivity. The manufacturer describes the Range Rover SV Coupe as "dramatic and desirable," with a "seductive" body and "supremely" refined interior. Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern calls this a vehicle that "will resonate on an emotional level."

Technical details are non-existent at this point, but it's fair to assume the SV Coupe will share its underpinnings and powertrains with its posher siblings, like the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar; the Range Rover range's entry-level model is the compact Evoque. (To say Land Rover is cashing in on the heritage behind the Range Rover name is an understatement.)

The only image Land Rover has provided is this overhead shot of an interior distinctive for its two-tone leather treatment and a wood-trimmed console that reminds us of high-end home stereo equipment.

Land Rover says it will build just 999 examples of the SV Coupe, which will be sold worldwide.
