Hyundai Elantras Recalled Over Brake Pedal Stop Pad

Pad breakdown blamed

Transport Canada is issuing a recall on 2013 and 2014 Hyundai Elantra models. On some of those cars, an issue with the brake pedal could cause problems with the brake lights or when shifting out of park.

The problem is the brake pedal stopper. The pad that stops the pedal from going too far when you slam on the brakes. The material the pad is made from could degrade over time.

If that pad material degrades, it could cause a number of issues. The first is that the brake light switch would stay on when the brakes are released. That leaves the brake lights on continuously, so drivers around you can't tell when or if you're actually braking.

The other problem is that it could activate a brake switch safety override. That would turn on the traction control check engine light, but also allow the shift lever to be moved without pressing the brakes. That could let the vehicle roll away unintentionally.

Both of those could increase the risk of a crash. It's an easy fix, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad. The recall affects 103,556 2013 and 2014 Hyundai Elantra models.
