2025 Toyota Sienna Uses Radar to Ensure You Don’t Leave Your Kids Behind

Even though they aren’t as popular as they once were, minivans are still the kings of the family vehicle segment, and the 2025 Toyota Sienna wants to make sure they don't lose the crown by adding innovative new tech for parents.

The biggest update is the addition of Advanced Rear Seat Reminder, which is debuting globally in the 2025 Sienna. The technology works thanks to a detector hidden in the roof liner of the vehicle that uses a 60 GHz band radar to scan the second and third rows for occupants.
Although rear seat reminders are anything but new, Toyota believes that its system is better than the rest, since radar can detect subtler movements and works in low light situations, unlike camera-based systems.

If the detector senses movement in the rear of the vehicle after the engine has shut off and the driver-side door has opened, closed, and then been locked, the Sienna will flash its hazard lights and sound the door lock chime. If it continues to detect movement after a minute and a half, the minivan will sound the horn. On vehicles whose owners have opted in for Advanced Rear Seat Reminder notifications on their phones, the system will send a push notification after about four minutes and will alert the authorities after six.

Not all of the 2025 Sienna’s updates are quite so serious, though. In addition, a new vacuum cleaner and refrigerator have been integrated into the centre console and will be standard on the top-of-the-line Platinum grade. The range-topping trim will also come with a 10-inch head-up display, as well as a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, to go with the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that it shares with the XSE and XLE trims. Lower-priced models will instead get an 8-inch touchscreen.

Elsewhere, the interior benefits from new design elements, including Macadamia and Black leather seating for the Platinum model to go with the woodgrain finish on the centre console. Lower down in the lineup, the XSE and XLE trims will get SofTex trimmed seats with an embossed pattern, and the LE trim gets Gray woven fabric seats. All benefit from a better wireless smartphone charger that will refill your device’s battery faster.

Power will continue to be supplied by a hybrid powertrain in 2025. The system delivers a total of 245 horsepower and consumes an estimated 6.6 L/100 km combined on FWD models and 6.7 L/100 km in AWD models.

A full breakdown of each trim level as well as pricing for the 2025 Sienna will be shared at a later date. Toyota says that the minivan will start reaching Canadian showrooms later this fall.
