We may have just driven the brand-new, all-electric Volvo EX90 for the first time, but that doesn’t mean that its internal combustion counterpart, the XC90, is dead. In fact, the Swedish automaker just pulled the veil off an update that will keep the aging SUV on the road for a few more years.
For 2025, the XC90 gets a remodelled exterior that brings it more in line with modern Volvo design language. Although its overall look dates back to 2015, the new V-slat grille and reworked bumpers help keep it looking fresh.
The bigger change is arguably inside, where customer feedback has led the redesign. A new storage space (including an extra cupholder) has been added to the centre console and the wireless phone charger has moved behind the central tunnel to make the cabin more convenient than before.
In addition, the XC90 benefits from the latest generation of Volvo infotainment with Google Built-in. A larger, 11.2-inch central touchscreen has higher resolution than the outgoing model’s display, and features an updated layout. With the update commonly used apps, like maps, media, and phone are moved to the home screen, and a context-dependent bar has been added to the bottom of the screen to improve usability.
Powertrain options remain the same for 2025, with one plug-in hybrid and two mild-hybrid options globally. The former makes use of a 2.0L inline-four with an electric motor and they combine to make 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. The model can go up to 53 km per charge on electric power alone in Canada.
Although it is now pushing 10 years of age, and Volvo hopes to transition to an all electric lineup, the XC90 continues to contribute significantly to sales as one of its best-selling models, the brand says. Production of the updated XC90 will begin before the end of 2024, and pricing will be announced closer to then.
