In one of the most daring car-related heists we've ever seen, two suspects in a stolen black Audi drove through the Vaughan Mills Mall located in a Toronto suburb. And the whole thing was captured on the shopping centre's security cameras.
Like something out of the Blues Brothers, a black 2011 Audi A4 with a Quebec license plate crashed through one of the glass entrance doors at the mall in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA, which in this case might also stand for Grand Theft Auto). After the early morning smash, the suspects drove up and down the main corridors until they stopped at an electronics store. They then broke out through another door.
York Regional Police posted video footage of the wild scene on the force's YouTube channel. It doesn't show the suspected theft, but it sure shows the break-and-enter part of the crime. Police arrived well after the suspects had escaped, so there was no in-mall car chase.
A police spokesperson said that a number of electronics were stolen, though the exact items weren't detailed. It was quick, though, with the suspects in and out of the mall in less than five minutes. Give Audi's quattro AWD system some credit for the impressive traction on the mall's slick floors.
Police say that nobody was harmed in the crash. They also said to be on the lookout for the black Audi, which had a "Ladies on Wheels" windshield banner. The car has since been found.
After the theft, a number of news outlets were able to locate the owner of the 2011 Audi A4. CTV News reports that it was owned by Taylor-Anna Kobinger, a resident of Laval, Que. Kobinger described a carjacking of her Audi and her reaction to this news.
“First, I cried, I freaked out because I don't have that kind of money to fix it,” Kobinger said about learning the fate of her car. “Never in my life did I expect to see my car in a mall – literally never – I was very surprised to have it all the way [in Vaughan].”
York Regional Police say they're still looking into the crime.
