The Subaru Outback is getting some small but useful upgrades for 2023. Starting with a new front fascia and revised outside body cladding, the Outback will get an updated multimedia system that adds wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, updates to Subaru's EyeSight driver assistance system, and a new Onyx trim grade. It will also get a price increase of $1,500, so it will start from $32,695.
The styling changes enlarge the Outback's grille, making it much more prominent than before. Wider side grille openings add a bit of aggression to the look, and Subaru has moved the fog lights inward to sit just inboard of the headlights.
Subaru's basic twin seven-inch infotainment system is the same as last year, with the wired versions of Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The 11.6-inch portrait-layout screen on the Touring trim and higher is the one that gets the updates to make those phone pairing systems wireless. Android Auto now gets a full-screen mode, which was lacking from the previous system. Outbacks with Navigation add What3Words, a system that divides the world into grids using words instead of long coordinates. It's a way to share locations that don't have addresses more easily.
The EyeSight driver assistance system gets a new brake booster along with software and hardware changes that Subaru says let it operate more smoothly. The Premier XT grade gets a third camera that can spot pedestrians and cyclists sooner when driving into an intersection, helping avoid collisions.
The Onyx trim is new and is Subaru's take on the black trim and wheels trend. The model starts from $38,695, putting it near the middle of the Outback lineup. It has black trim elements and gunmetal 18-inch alloys, as well as a rear bumper step and a special two-tone interior. The two-tone seats use a soft-touch all-weather material.
Expect 2023 Subaru Outback models to hit dealers in the next few months.
