If you were worried about the future of Mercedes-Benz's AMG performance division as it makes the transition to electric vehicles, don't be. The brand has just unveiled the absolutely stunning Vision AMG show car that is built on an all-new platform developed exclusively for AMG EVs, and it's something to get excited about.
"AMG is reinventing itself. As was once the case with our founding fathers, there has been an amazing feeling of new beginnings here in Affalterbach for quite some time now. The course has been well and truly set for an electrified future, and we've set the bar high," said AMG boss Philipp Scheimer.
"At AMG, we have always stood for that extra shot of emotion, driving fun, handling, ingenious aerodynamic features, and other innovative solutions. And that's what we continue to stand for with our first BEV developed entirely in Affalterbach. We're developing everything from scratch, from the dedicated AMG.EA platform to the revolutionary drivetrain technology with which we will take performance electric mobility to a whole new level."
Long, low, wide, and sleek, the Vision AMG has the classic sports car profile, complete with a teardrop tail that tapers toward the rear of the car. AMG calls it "monolithic," with the fewest number of visible panel joins and shut lines possible. AMG has also painted over the windows (yes, that's paint), to make the car look even more like a sculpture. We don't expect the production model to have this feature, however.
The front end is a highlight, with a three-LED element patterned after the Mercedes star. It's far from subtle, but AMG says it will let everyone know this is a Benz night or day. Or possibly from space.
More than just a logo, the light bar that joins the two stars can show animations to welcome you to the car or just stay on to work as a light.
The silver paint and large star pattern along the rear are meant to tie it to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team. The same goes for the exposed carbon fibre and the 22-inch wheels with aerodynamic cladding. Petronas green paint is used on the diffuser, another nod to the team.
What's powering the Vision AMG? The brand isn't saying much except that all of its driveline components were "developed entirely from scratch" for the car, including the AMG.EA platform, high voltage battery, and Axial Flux Motor. AMG says only that it "delivers substantially more power than conventional electric motors." This is an AMG, so expect loads of power.
The Vision AMG is a concept car, but Mercedes-Benz chief designer Gorden Wagener says it represents what an electric AMG "could" look like when the first all-electric AMG debuts in 2025.
