The 2022 Kia EV6 electric car is set to arrive at Canadian dealers this month. The entry-level model to the EV6 lineup starts from $44,995 (before destination fees or government incentives) and will offer an estimated 373 km of driving range.
The EV6 is the first dedicated EV for the brand, though the Soul EV and Niro EV were Kia's first to run on electric power (they were, however, based on internal-combustion car platforms). The large hatchback (Kia calls it a crossover) is bigger than first glance would suggest, with a wheelbase nearly as long as the Telluride's, though a shorter overall length.
Kia will offer two battery packs in Canada, starting with a 58-kWh pack that comes paired with a 168-hp electric motor driving the rear wheels and offering up to 373 km of range. The larger pack is 77.4 kWh and starts with a 225-hp motor on the rear. This one has a range estimate of 499 km. AWD models use the larger battery pack, and combine a 99-hp front motor with a 221-hp motor in the rear, for a range estimate of 441 km.
At the top of the range is the Kia EV6 GT, set to arrive later this year. The GT uses the larger battery and a 215-hp front motor plus a 365-hp rear motor. That means this EV6 is a 580-hp Kia, by far the automaker's most powerful model to date.
The EV6 offers up to 800V DC fast charging, capable of giving the car an extra 100 km of range in under five minutes. A 10 to 80 per cent charge, or adding up to 380 km of range, can happen in under 18 minutes, Kia says.
Canadian EV6 models will offer an available heat pump to help maintain range when the heater is running. The car also has vehicle-to-load technology allowing it to supply up to 1.9kW of power to run personal electronics, home appliances, or even charge another EV in an emergency.
