Ford is stepping up the off-road capability of its smallest North American pickup by introducing the new Tremor package for the Ranger.
Let’s get straight to the Tremor’s goods: a suspension lift, 32-inch General Grabber tires riding on 17-inch wheels, a locking rear differential, skid plates, and FOX 2.0 monotube dampers with remote reservoirs and hydraulic rebound stops. All of this combines to offer the Ranger Tremor 246 mm (9.7 in) of ground clearance, an approach angle of 30.9 degrees, departure of 25.5, and breakover of 24.2. Increased wheel travel in the front and rear also means that the suspension has more room to do its job, resulting in a more controlled off-road ride.
This package should improve the Ranger in every way off-road, including in the high-speed arena, where this truck will compete with the likes of the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
Power remains the same for Tremor package: a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, sent through a 10-speed automatic.
Both of Ford’s computer-assisted off-road drive modes are present: Trail Control and Terrain Management. The former acts like off-road cruise control, controlling the brakes and throttle to drive your truck at a set speed, allowing you to focus on the wheel, while the latter includes four different drive modes tailored to unique off-road situations like mud, rocks, and sand. A bank of auxiliary switches has been added to Tremor as well to make accessorizing this truck easier.
To make sure you know it’s a Tremor, this truck gets a magnetic-painted grille surround, red nostril accents, suede seat inserts with “Tremor” stitching, special badging, and optional hood and body graphics. New hoop steps help you climb into the truck while not giving up any ground clearance. Two recovery hooks have been added at the rear of the Ranger Tremor to complement the standard pair up front.
If you’re interested in a Tremor, it can be added to crew cab trucks in either XLT or Lariat trims. Checking the Tremor box will set you back US$4,290; Canadian pricing will be announced at a later date.
Production of the Ranger Tremor will begin in early 2021.
