The Kia Niro has so far proved to be a popular choice for those in the market for a small, fuel-efficient crossover. The Korean automaker doesn't want that to change, so naturally, it's applied a number of updates to the vehicle for 2020 to ensure it stays relevant.
This mid-cycle refresh includes new headlights and fog lamps, a redesigned grille and new LED daytime running lights. Out back, the "faux skidplate" integrated into the rear bumper has been widened a bit, while new LED combination taillights have also been added. Kia has introduced new 16-inch and 18-inch wheel designs, as well.
Perhaps of more importance are the various technology updates. The 2020 Kia Niro comes standard with a crisp 8-inch touchscreen display, which replaces the old 7-inch display in previous models, while a brand new 10.25-inch display is available as an option. A new Harmon/Kardon premium audio system, mood lighting with six different colours and an electronic parking brake join the list of optional extras, too.
Kia has also added some new features to the Kia Drive Wise suite of active safety systems in the way of Lane Following with Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist.
Rounding out the technology updates are a new set of optional paddle shifters, which serve as standard gear select paddles on the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models and activate the regenerative braking control on the Niro EV. The three powertrains otherwise remain unchanged from the 2019 model year Niro.
If you need a reminder, the standard Niro uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and small 1.56 kWh battery, which together make 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The Niro plug-in hybrid, meanwhile, uses the same 1.6-litre engine but also uses an 8.9 kWh battery that provides a full-electric driving range of roughly 41 kilometres. Output remains the same between the hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
The Niro EV has a 201-horsepower electric motor and 64 kWh lithium-ion battery providing an estimated driving range of 385 kilometres.
The 2020 Kia Niro will go on sale in early 2020, with pricing set to be announced closer to its on-sale date.
