Harley-Davidson has priced the Livewire, the company's first electric motorcycle. Not surprisingly, it's not going to be cheap. But it will come in under $40,000.
The Livewire is the first electric motorcycle not just from Harley-Davidson, but from any of the major bike manufacturers. It was first shown off in prototype form way back in 2014, as a way to gauge interest in the machine. Well, it looks like there was enough, because we saw the production version last fall.
Powering the bike is an electric motor, mounted low under the battery for improved handling and balance. Harley hasn't said how much power or torque it makes, but that it can hit 100 km/h from a stop in 3.5 seconds. Likewise, the company isn't giving the size of the lithium-ion battery pack, but they are giving the range. It's 178 km on the SAE electric test cycle. Not massive numbers, but probably more than adequate for most riders, where taking a break to enjoy the scenery seems more common than for drivers. The bike can be charged using a standard plug and has an onboard charger to allow it. It can also be juiced using a Level 3 DC fast charge station (with an SAE Combo connection).
Harley-Davidson is giving the Livewire an extensive telemetry and connectivity suite. The rider can check charge status, see the bike's location, and even get security alerts through an app connected to their phone.
The suspension is a fully adjustable system from Showa both front and rear. The tires are special Michelin Scorcher Sport rubber Harley says were designed exclusively for this bike. Of course, since this is a Harley-Davidson, extensive customization options and parts will be available.
Pricing for the Livewire will start from $37,250. Pre-orders start in February with it set to go on sale in August.
