Volkswagen has confirmed the current generation of its retro-inspired Beetle will be the last.
That's according to the UK's Autocar magazine, who had a chat with VW R&D boss Frank Welsch at the Geneva auto show.
Recent months have brought plenty of Beetle-related speculation, including the possibility of a return to rear-drive thanks to VW's forthcoming EV platform.
But Welsch said that retro uses for that RWD layout will be limited to whatever production model the Transporter-inspired ID Buzz turns into.
"The car was made with history in mind, but you can't do it five times and have a new new new Beetle," said Welsch. "Two or three generations is enough, now."
VW has said it plans to bring a production version of the ID Buzz EV to market in 2021 or 2022.
