Newer, Cheaper Tesla Coming?

Apr 28, 2016

Summary
Tesla CEO Elon Musk promises even cheaper, fourth Tesla.

The recent Model 3 launch must not have filled the coffers at Tesla quite enough. Though the company's most recent sensation hasn't even hit production yet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is already talking about a fourth model as though it's a real thing.

Last week at the Future Transport Solutions Conference in Oslo, Norway, Musk said in a presentation that while Tesla began with the Tesla Model S, a high-priced, low-volume car out of fiscal necessity, the company's goal all along has been to produce cars that are increasingly affordable. He then went on to discuss a fourth generation, smaller car that seems to be in the works.

"With something like the Model 3, it's designed such that roughly half of the people will be able to afford the car. Then, with fourth generation and smaller cars, we'll ultimately be in the position where almost everyone will be able to afford the car."

The discussion is captured in the video linked below, in which Musk largely addresses Norway's role in normalizing electric vehicle production but also talks about fossil fuel subsidies, the prospects of electric versus hydrogen fuel cell technology, and his plan for high-density inner city mass transit.
