Jaguar enters uncharted territory for 2016 with the F-Pace, its first non-car. It joins the likes of the Porsche Macan, Benz GLC, and BMW X3 in the entry-level luxury crossover arena and should go a long way to growing Jaguar’s sales figures in the great white North.
Although size-wise the F-Pace is similar to Land Rover’s Discovery Sport, the two are completely different vehicles. The F-Pace is a strict five seater, and it rides on a version of the XE and XF’s aluminum-intensive architecture. Furthermore, you won’t find any of Land Rover’s off-road chops in the F-Pace’s DNA; the F-Pace is a strict on-road machine. Its all-wheel-drive system sends 100 per cent of power to the rear wheels, but can split the power 50-50 when traction is needed at all four corners in as little as 165 ms. The system also features torque vectoring for additional agility. Jaguar has also made adaptive dampers an option, though they aren’t the magnetic variety found in Land Rover products.
The F-Pace cuts a sporting profile with a long hood, swept-back cabin, and low roofline. Jaguar’s design language translates well to crossover form, the F-Type boasting serious presence when fitted with the available 22-inch wheels and LED headlamps.
It should come as no surprise that the F-Pace will be offered to Canadians with Jaguar’s ubiquitous 3.0-litre supercharged V6 in 340- and 380-hp tunes; the latter offering up a 0-100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds, besting nearly all of its rivals. What’s more surprising is the F-Pace will also be available with diesel power. The brand’s new Ingenium turbodiesel develops 180 hp and a whopping 430 lb-ft of torque. All models come paired to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The F-Pace can be jam-packed with all manner of optional technology and active safety equipment including two available touchscreen infotainment systems, an 825-watt Meridian sound system, full-speed radar cruise control with queue assist, 360-degree parking camera, parallel parking function, laser head-up display and more. One gadget worth highlighting is the exclusive Activity Key that is a shock-proof, waterproof fob that one can wear on their wrist like a watch.
The 20d AWD and 35t AWD powertrain configurations are available in Premium, Prestige, and R-Sport trims. The S and First Edition come with the more powerful 380-hp V6.
