You can't shake a stick/swing a cat/insert your overused cliche of choice here without hitting a pickup truck these days. But the impressive numbers of trucks companies like Ram sell every year include more than just the quarter-ton models that most buyers go for. Commercial buyers looking for the toughest Ram has to offer get the 5500 model, a chassis cab model that comes without a cargo box to facilitate upfitting by the aftermarket.
For 2017, the Ram 5500 gets a little tougher, adding 454 kg (1,000 pounds) of towing capacity, which takes those figures to 11,634 kg (25,650 pounds).
Other additions include a standard five micron cabin air filter and an optional LED tail light.
The Ram 5500 can be optioned with your choice of two engines. There's a 6.4L gasoline V8 that makes 370 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, and a Cummins-built 6.7L diesel inline six-cylinder good for 325 hp and 750 lb-ft.
The gas V8 comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel comes with a six-speed manual that can be optioned to a six-speed auto.
Most of the 5500's standard and available features are aimed at commercial buyers, including the ability to set up multiple trucks to open and start with the same key, a handy thing for fleet buyers.
Manual trailer-tow mirrors are standard, and can be optioned with heat and power adjustability. And because the 5500 is designed from the get-go to be upfitter-friendly, all models come without a cargo box.
Air conditioning is standard, but dual-zone temperature control is an extra-cost feature, and the same goes for power door locks.
Just like the Ram 1500/2500/3500/4500, the 5500 can be ordered with a regular cab or a spacious four-door crew cab whose rear seats are heated in higher-end models. Standard high-tech niceties include Bluetooth, USB port, auxiliary input and a two-speaker stereo that can be optioned to six.
