Tekz Great mid size sedan March 22, 2020 GS
Overall Score
Great car! Excellent int and ext design and lots of room for my needs...for its size it also has great fuel economy and 2.5L NA engine is sufficient for daily driving in the city. It is a looker and not too common on the road unlike the Camry and Accord...those are very popular and reliable but more expensive. The 6 is better priced, also reliable, still built in Japan, has nicer int mat’ls and quieter cabin. Ride is great as it handles really well, comfortable yet composed and sport ride and feels like a luxury sedan when you drive it. Now that’s value for money...not so much the resale value that Camry and Accord boasts about!

Issue: On certain vehicles, the fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough or may not start and the check engine light may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power while driving could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump.

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software error in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could cause the valve clearance adjuster not to work properly. This could result in internal engine damage. If this happens, the engine may misfire and lose power. In the worst case, the engine may stall while driving without the ability to restart it. The malfunction indicator light (MIL) may also turn on in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the PCM software.

Issue: The front cross-member may rust due to a manufacturing defect. This could affect handling and cause reduced steering control. Note: This problem only affects cars registered and operated in areas of heavy road salt usage during winter months (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador), Safety Risk: Reduced handling and steering control could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mazda will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealership to inspect the front cross-member and install a drain hose. Depending on its condition, the dealer will install a reinforcement and a wax coating, or replace the front cross-member. Note: This is an expansion of Recall 2018-504.

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected. Additional Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-040.

On certain vehicles, the passenger frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment. Increased pressure may cause the inflator to rupture, which could allow fragments to be propelled toward vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury. This could also damage the airbag module, which could prevent proper deployment. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 2013-112 (Mazda Recall 6913D), 2014-245 (Mazda Recall 7714F), 2015-624 (Mazda Recall 9015L), 2016-259 (Mazda Recall 9416E) and 2017-011 (Mazda Recall 0617A).

On certain vehicles, there may be excessive weld spatter on the front passenger seat frame due to a manufacturing issue. Over time, the occupant classification sensor wire harness may chafe and wear against the weld splatter and cause an electrical short. This could result in a loss of power steering assist and/or a deactivation of the entire airbag system. A loss of power steering assist could unexpectedly increase steering effort, which could increase the risk of a crash, and failure of airbags to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Correction: Dealers will affix a protective pad to the seat frame to prevent the wire harness from chafing. If the harness has already been damaged, dealers will also apply insulating tape on the harness. If the harness has been damaged beyond repair, dealers will replace the bottom seat cushion containing the sensor, and the harness. Note: The airbag warning light, along with other malfunction indicator lights will illuminate in the instrument cluster if this condition is present.

On certain vehicles equipped with hand-operated parking brakes, the rear brake caliper protective boot on the parking brake system may not perform as intended, causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode. Over time, the actuator shaft may become stuck in the brake caliper body which could lead to decreased parking brake holding force or cause the parking brake to drag while driving. Decreased parking brake holding force could cause the vehicle to roll away if parked on a slope which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the rear caliper assemblies as necessary.

On certain vehicles equipped with the 2.5L engine, a particular type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line which may cause a restriction in the line. If this occurs, the fuel tank pressure may become excessively negative when the emission control system works to purge the vapors from the canister. As the canister is purged repeatedly during normal operation, the stress on the fuel tank may eventually result in a crack causing a fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect the canister vent line and, if a web is found, the fuel tank and check valve on the canister vent line will be replaced. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will be reprogrammed with modified software having a function to avoid excessive negative pressure of the fuel tank.
