Toyota has just released pricing for the all-new 2019 Corolla Hatchback. The new car starts from $20,980, $1,770 less than the iM that it replaces.
The new car is built on Toyota's latest New Global Architecture platform. That allows for a wider stance and Toyota says it has a lower centre of gravity for improved performance. The styling is much improved over the iM, and the standard LED headlights help add to the sporty appearance of the car.
Under the hood, the Corolla Hatch gets an all-new 2.0L four-cylinder engine. That engine delivers 168 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. That's a 31 hp improvement over last year's car. It's paired with two transmissions. The first is a six-speed manual that offers rev-matching on downshifts. The second is a new Direct Shift CVT. Toyota calls it the first passenger-car CVT with a launch gear. That allows for a wider ratio spread on the highway and should help remove the rubber-band effect that CVTs can have on take-off.
The Corolla Hatchback debuts Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0. The new system adds low-light pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection to the Pre-Collision System. It has a lane-departure warning system that can detect the edge of the roadway, not just the lines, and Lane Trace Assist helps drivers steer when radar cruise control is engaged.
All Corolla Hatchbacks get Apple CarPlay and an Entune 3.0 audio system with an 8.0-inch screen.
The base model is the S, which comes with a manual or CVT. It offers power windows and 15-inch steel wheels. SE upgrades this to 16-inch alloys, leather steering wheel, heated front seats, and CVT models get paddle shifters. The SE offers an Upgrade package that adds a heated wheel, 18-inch alloys, blind-spot monitoring, and wireless charging.
Finally, the top XSE trim, which is CVT only, adds an enhanced Entune audio system with navigation. It has dual-zone climate control, leatherette seat trim, a power driver's seat, and a 7.0-inch information display.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback goes on sale August 15th.
