GM Opening Doors at CAMI Assembly Plant

GM's CAMI Assembly plant is opening its doors to let people take a look at how the Chevrolet Equinox is made.

It's a big year for the Ingersoll, ON, plant. In May, the facility marked the five millionth vehicle to roll off of the line. The 30th anniversary of the plant is later this year, along with the 100th anniversary of GM Canada.

So on August 8th, the plant will be open to self-guided tours of the 158,000 square metre facility. Two blocks of tours will be offered, one in the early afternoon and one in the evening, and if you're planning to go GM needs you to register up front. Spaces are limited and kids 12 and up are allowed.

The tour will let you walk from where rolls of steel are stamped into body panels, then through the assembly process, all the way to where the completed Equinox rolls out the door. A selection of other GM vehicles will be on display, and there will be a BBQ on the front lawn for those attending.

The CAMI plant started as a joint venture with Suzuki, building Sidekicks and Trackers. It later moved to production of the Suzuki Vitara, and then currently the Chevrolet Equinox. This is a somewhat rare chance to see the inside of a modern automotive assembly facility in person.
