Infiniti is letting the all-new QX50 crossover out of the bag early. It's set to debut at the LA auto show later this month, but we have pictures and details of the crossover that debuts the variable compression engine now.
The compact QX50 uses an all-new platform. It has more high strength steel, including what Infiniti calls the first automotive use of Super High Formability steel, to make a stronger, more rigid platform. That allows for more refinement and better handling.
The new platform offers better packaging efficiency than before, allowing for more passenger and cargo room. The QX50 will offer up to 1,048 L with the sliding rear seat in position, and 1,699 with that seat folded. Infiniti says that's room for three golf bags or a stroller lengthways, with room for more stuff with the seats in place.
The QX50's big trick, though, is the all-new variable compression 2.0L four-cylinder. Which Nissan says can add boost and drop compression to as low as 8:1 for more performance, or raise it as high as 14:1 for more efficiency. We imagine the compression changes come with fueling and boost changes too as higher compression generally improves both performance and economy. The engine does all that as you drive using an actuator attached to the crankshaft.
The engine offers 268 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Infiniti said that they expect best in class fuel economy of 8.7 L/100 km combined for the front-drive models and 9.0 for all-wheel drive cars. That's 35 percent better than the previous V6 front-drive QX50. The engine is connected to a continuously variable transmission.
The QX50 gets Nissan's ProPilot driver assist. The semi-autonomous driving system will help handle acceleration, braking, and even steering "during single-lane highway driving."
Infiniti hasn't said when the 2019 QX50 will go on sale, but we expect more details and photos, including a look inside, at the LA reveal and closer to the on-sale date.
