Mazda is bringing a refreshed Mazda6 to the LA auto show later this month. The new model gets more power, revised styling, and more safety technology.
This is the third refresh for the Mazda6 since it was last redesigned in 2012, but the automaker has made lots of changes in those refreshes including additional sound isolation last year. This one is no different.
It starts with a new engine, plus more tech for the existing one. The base Skyactiv-G 2.5L four cylinder gets cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. The big news under the hood is that new engine. It's the 2.5L turbo four from the CX-9 crossover.
In the CX-9, that engine makes 250 hp and a brawny 310 lb-ft of torque, with that torque arriving at just 2,000 RPM. That's a big jump from the 184 hp and 185 lb-ft that the old engine makes. Mazda hasn't said if the 6 will get the same power as the CX-9, but it will likely be close.
Mazda calls the revised styling "Mature Elegance", and worked to raise the quality of the feel inside and out. We'll wait until we can see the whole car to judge, but the teaser photos do show a car that looks more premium. The exterior changes include a chrome strip that now wraps under the headlights and a 3d-mesh grille in place of the old car's slats. The new interior uses Japanese Sen wood, a wood used in traditional musical instruments and furniture. The dash vents are revised fo a cleaner appearance and an uncluttered upper dash.
The Mazda6 gets a wider range of i-Activsense safety features. Those include radar cruise control that can handle start-stop traffic, as well as a surround view camera system.
Mazda will show the Mazda6 along with an updated CX-5, both of which get the new cylinder deactivation four-cylinder. The full reveal is November 29th.
