Bentley Building Electric Sports Car

Good news if you prefer two-seaters to off-roaders for your super-luxury car needs. Bentley has said that their fifth model is going to be an electric sports car, not a sub-Bentayga SUV.

Speaking to Autocar, Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer said that "what I can say is that a small SUV is no longer on the scheme. We’re favouring a car with a full electric powertrain." He had previously told the publication that Bentley was looking at either an electric two-seater or a smaller SUV to fill the fifth spot in the company's lineup.

The new car is expected to take design cues from the EXP12 Speed 6e shown in Geneva earlier this year. But it won't be that car. The new car will share a platform with the Porsche Mission E EV, which is larger than the 6e concept.

Bentley has big plans for electrification, with Durheimer saying "we intend to be the leader in electrification in the luxury segment." The company feels that the big torque and "seamless acceleration" offered by electric powertrains are ideal for a quiet, smooth luxury car.

Durheimer also confirmed in Frankfurt that Bentley would be offering three plug-in hybrids. The Bentayga hybrid, which had previously been announced, as well as hybrid versions of the Continental and Flying Spur.
