Mazda is releasing a completely restyled version of their CX-5 small SUV at the LA auto show next month, but they wanted to give us a tease of what's on the way. The photo is just a silhouette, but it does give some details and some good hints of the new styling.
For starters, the new CX-5 looks to have a much longer front overhang. The new nose appears much closer to that of the larger CX-9. Compared to the current CX-5 it's much more aggressive with long, squinting headlights and a pronounced pitch forward. At the back, there is almost no rear overhang with the rear wheel arch seeming to end at the very back of the body.
Overall it's a look that keeps inline with Mazda's latest KODO styling language, as seen on the CX-9 and MX-5. Where there are straight lines, they are sharper than before, but where there are curves the curves are much more rounded and pronounced.
Highlighting the greenhouse, and helping to make the roofline look lower, a chrome accent strip running along the base of the side glass is new. It also seems to hide the smaller window normally found behind the rear door.
Mazda calls the new CX-5 a 2017 in their announcement, meaning it should be on sale before the end of this year. With a world premiere on November 16, that doesn't give them much time to get it to dealers. It's also only four years after the CX-5 debuted as a 2013 model.
