Subaru has announced pricing for its 2017 Legacy sedan and Outback crossover models, along with enhanced active safety features.
The brand's EyeSight safety suite gains reverse automatic braking and high-beam assist, which become part of the Technology Package available on most trim levels. Both models also gain a couple of new trims, which sport unique exterior trim elements.
Base prices remain the same for both cars ($23,495 for Legacy 2.5i 6MT and $27,995 for Outback 2.5i 6MT); some trims see a nominal $100 price increase, and prices for models with the Tech Package go up $400 to reflect the new safety features.
A new Legacy Sport Tech model slots in between Touring Tech and Limited models with a MSRP of $30,395; the Outback's two new Premier trims become the top models with each engine, topping the Limited model and only coming with the Tech package as standard. 2.5i Premier Tech trim costs $38,595, and 3.6R Premier Tech is a $41,595 vehicle.
The reverse braking feature uses ultrasonic sensors to automatically stop the car if an obstacle is detected and the driver doesn't respond. And the auto high beams automatically dip the headlights when oncoming traffic is detected in nighttime driving.
In the Outback, new Premier Tech and 3.6R Premier Tech models get a dark titanium grille, 18-inch dark grey wheels and silver door handles, roof rails and side sills. Inside, there's java brown leather upholstery and woodgrain and gloss black accents.
Limited trims also get a standard heated steering wheel.
On the Legacy side, a new 2.5i Sport Tech model gets its own dark titanium grille, 18-inch wheels, satin side mirrors, gloss black trim and side sill spoiler. The interior gains carbon design dash trim, two-tone grey cloth sport seats with blue stitching and blue and silver interior stitched elsewhere.
Nothing changes mechanically: 2.5i models use a 2.5L four-cylinder engine good for 175 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, and 3.6R trims all share a 3.6L six-cylinder making 256 hp and 247 lb-ft. Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Touring models can be had with a choice of six-speed manual or continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission; all other four-cylinder models and all six-cylinder trims are CVT-only.
