Cadillac's ATS hasn't exactly been a sales phenomenon since launching in 2013, so the brand is working on a way to try and give the premium compact sedan and coupe a boost. The way they're doing that is to try and provide some more value.
Normally "more value" means "cut costs" in GM speak, but in this case they're doing it by making the options simpler, and by making them better. Which is a long way of saying that the smallest engine is going away. The little loved 2.5L four will be pushed aside in favour of the 2.0L turbo as the new base. That engine makes 272 horsepower, and if it's not enough for you the 336 hp 3.6L V6 will remain. The base price will rise because of the better engine, but the other trim levels will get more features and a lower price. In addition to the new engine, the base model coupe and sedan also get CUE infotainment with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bose surround-sound audio system, and a rearview camera. The base model rises by $1,380 and the other trims drop by between $650 and $1,100 in the US. Canadian pricing isn't yet available but should show a similar change.
Cadillac is hoping that boosting the base engine will also boost sales and lure customers away from the BMW 3-series and Audi A4. Here's to the the plan's success, because if the ATS goes the way of the ELR, so goes the 464 hp ATS-V super sedan.
