1992 Bentley Continental R
In the early 1980s, the Bentley brand had been neglected for the previous 15 years and made up only a very small percentage of the Rolls Royce company's production and sales worldwide. The first move was to turbo charge the standard Bentley 4 door sedan the Bentley Mulsanne. The Turbo model was subsequently launched in 1982. Still they wanted to further enhance the distinctive sporting nature of the Bentley brand and move away from a Bentley that was simply a Rolls Royce with a different grille The concept/prototype was displayed at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show as Rolls-Royce's Project 90 concept. This was met with an enthusiastic reception and it was later decided this design would better suit a Bentley coupe than as a replacement for the Rolls Royce Corniche. It would now become the Bentley Continental R.
The Continental designation recalls the Bentley Continental of the post-war period. The R was meant to recall the R Type Bentleys from the 1950s as well as the Turbo R of the 1980s and 90's where the R refers to roadholding.
The introduction of the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo, and then the Continental R created the revival of Bentley as a separate marque. It is widely acknowledged this program saved Rolls Royce Motor cars and formed the groundwork which led to the buyout and parting of the Rolls Royce and Bentley brands in 1998. Bentley was once again capable of standing alone in its own right.
From launch, 1991, the Continental was equipped with 6.75 L Garrett-turbocharged engine from the then current Bentley Turbo R. In early, first generation, cars (1991 - 1993) power output of 325 hp was estimated at 4000rpm and peak torque of 450 lb·ft at 2000rpm It’s an estimate as Rolls-Royce still had a policy of not supplying official figures, preferring to describe ratings simply as sufficient.
The car used the new 4-speed GM 4L80-E automatic transmission which had been exhaustively tested by Rolls Royce for over 1 million miles and modified by them in order to deliver very high levels of refinement. Other features and refinements included self-levelling hydraulic suspension and twin calliper ventilated disc brakes at the front. Engine management was provided by an MK-Motronic digital fuel injection setup with a fully mapped ignition control system. When introduced, top speed was 145 mph (233 km/h) with a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 6.6 seconds.
All cars were equipped with a centre console mounted electronic gear selector. This was the first time Rolls Royce had made a car without the autobox selector on the steering column. This was also the introduction of a Sport button to simultaneously adjust gearbox mapping and stiffen the suspension for more aggressive driving and handling. Keeping in mind that the Continental R is a large and heavy car it was widely acknowledged by road testers and journalists as displaying superb handling and road holding characteristics at high speeds. The Continental R was list priced for the North American market at US$271,780 in 1992.

The car in question is a very original Continental R imported into Canada from Japan in 2011. This car has had two very careful and caring owners here in Vancouver. Other than an upgraded Alpine entertainment system (original head unit is with the car) it is as it came from the factory. The current owner has even taken the time and expense to find 5 OEM spec Avon Turbospeed tires as originally fitted to the car. The car is mechanically solid and cosmetically excellent both inside and out. All service records since importation are with the car and available for inspection. This is the opportunity to acquire a low mileage example of one of the most beautifully proportioned coupes ever produced in original and unmolested condition.
