For years, staid styling was the norm for European sedans. The Germans in particular - BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi - were among the staunchest proponents of this, their cars sporting handsome but plain sheetmetal. That's changed, of course. It'd be a massive understatement to say that Chris Bangle's work as BMW's head stylist - think the most recent generations of 5 and 7 Series - caused some controversy.
